France's World Cup Inspires Raft of Plans

NEW YORK -- France will be in the international spotlight this year during soccer's World Cup '98, scheduled for June 10 to July 12.

Several tour firms, selected by the organizing committee, are offering packages. A listing follows:

  • Gullivers Sports Travel in Vista, Calif., is offering a 12-night Follow the Flag -- Team USA tour package that includes six nights' accommodations in Paris from June 14 to 20; three nights' accommodation in Lyon from June 20 to 23, and three nights in Nantes, June 23 to 26. Using the moderate category of accommodations, the price is $2,795 per person, double, and $4,295, single; using economy accommodations, the per person cost is $1,995, double, and $2,995, single. Gullivers also offers three- to five-night packages in Paris that take in two matches on specific dates between June 10 and July 6; prices start at $795 per person, double.

  • Rail Europe's EuroGroups division will offer a program focusing on various stages of World Cup play in Paris. In the first-round phase, a Follow Your Team plan includes 13 or 14 nights in Paris and tickets to the three matches played by the U.S., Jamaica or Mexico. Net prices to agents start at $2,859 per person, double. One ticket each for the second round and the quarterfinals is featured in Rail Europe's Enjoy the Show package, which also includes eight nights' accommodations in Paris. Net prices to agents start at $2,499. For semifinal, third-place matches and the final, the L'Excellence package includes nine nights in Paris at superior tourist hotels only and tickets to one game in each category.   • Multi-Tours/Omvesa of Los Angeles designed a program focusing on Paris and is offering plans ranging from three nights at the start of the matches to 34 nights for the duration of the tournament. One 11-night package, from July 2 to 13, includes tickets to four quarterfinal and semifinal matches as well as the final match. The cost per person, double, ranges from $2,100 in the lowest hotel category to $6,500 with superior rooms.
