Full-service spa to open in Ala Moana Center

HONOLULU -- A new full-service spa is scheduled to open in this city's largest shopping mall, Ala Moana Center.

Malama, an Aveda Lifestyle Salon Spa, is scheduled to open Nov. 17 on the third floor, next door to the Neiman Marcus store.

Ala Moana Center is high on the list for most Oahu visitors who are interested in shopping. It is located across from Ala Moana Park on the fringes of Waikiki.

The 5,000-square-foot spa is the latest in a spa craze that hit Hawaii recently.

In August, the Hyatt Regency Maui opened a spa, and a new spa opened at the Hyatt Regency Waikiki last spring.

Spas are on the way in Waikiki at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel and the Hilton Hawaiian Village's Kalia Tower, which will open next year.

"We felt that people shopping at the mall will want to take some time off and get a massage or a body treatment," said company controller Kevin Young.

Young said the company is not alone in its desire to put a spa in Ala Moana Center.

Five other companies were looking for space to open a spa at the time Malama secured its space, said Young.

Owner Mary Suiter clearly is aiming at visitors who shop at the mall.

"Our staff are not only Aveda-trained, but they also have the aloha spirit, which will make your visit to Malama the best part of your Hawaiian vacation," Suiter said in a message on the company's Web site.

Malama means to care for or nurture in Hawaiian.

Hair cuts at the spa will range in price from $38 to $125. Massages start at $80, and facials begin at $50 each.

The spa will offer four kinds of facials, including a Gentleman's Facial; makeup; hair tinting; waxing; body care with names like the Himalayan Rejuvenation Treatment and the Smoothing Body Polish, and seven kinds of massage, including the La Stone Hot Rock Massage and the Maternity Massage for pregnant women.

The spa will be open from 9:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays and from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sundays.

Drop-in visits are accepted, but reservations are recommended.
