NEW YORK -- The German National Tourist Office appointed Michaela
Klare, who once headed domestic marketing efforts, as director of
North American operations here, replacing Udo Grebe.
Klare, who has an MBA in tourism management from the University
of Trier, Germany, and managed domestic marketing for the GNTO at
its head office in Frankfurt, also oversaw operations for tour
company YMCA Travel Service and, most recently, served as project
manager for the Steigenberger Hotels chain, Germany's largest.
One of Klare's primary goals, she said, would be to court both
first-time and repeat visitors, including U.S. military personnel
who may have worked or been stationed in Germany.
According to the GNTO, almost 2 million Americans visit Germany
each year, making the country the fourth most popular with U.S.
vacationers to Europe, after the U.K., France and Italy.
"I want North Americans to see the new Germany, including the
splendid 'new' Berlin and all the wonders old and new that our
country has to offer," Klare said in a statement.
