Globus, Tourism Cares distribute American Icons grants

Tourism Cares, a travel industry-based nonprofit charitable organization is again partnering with Globus to give grants to five American tourism sites through the American Icons Grant Program, a joint project started in 2004.

Sites were selected by Globus and Tourism Cares based on several criteria. Each site is a point of interest on at least one Globus brand tour itinerary. Globus' brands are Globus, Brennan Vacations, Cosmos, Monograms and Avalon Waterways.

According to Carolyn Viles, Tourism Cares' program director, "The name of the program is American Icons, so we tried to choose things that are really iconic. We also tried to have a geographical spread."

The first round of grants for the program was given out for 2004-05. The second set of grants, for 2006-07, will go to the following sites:

" Crazy Horse National Memorial in Crazy Horse, S.D.

" The Memphis Rock 'n' Soul Museum in Memphis

" The Murie Science and Learning Center at Denali National Park and Reserve in Anchorage, Alaska.

" The Old State House in Boston

" St. Louis Cemetery #1 in New Orleans

Each of the sites will receive $9,000 split over two years, $4,500 per year.
