Gogo Tapped as Top U.S. Wholesaler

GEORGE TOWN -- Gogo Worldwide Vacations of Ramsey, N.J., was cited as wholesaler of the year at Marketplace '98, sponsored by the Cayman Islands Hotel & Condominium Association (CIHCA).

MLT Vacations of Minnetonka, Minn., was named charter operator of the year for the second consecutive year.

British Airways Holidays received the award as the European wholesaler of the year.

Thomas Jefferson, minister for tourism, commerce and transport, and CIHCA president Willy Giger, general manager of Morritt's Tortuga Club & Resort, presented the awards at the 13th annual marketing event.

According to Randy Pringle, Marketplace chairman and general manager of Treasure Island Resort, this year's event drew representatives from 50 wholesale tour companies.

"Marketplace is one of our most important annual tourism marketing events," Pringle said. "Wholesalers are exposed to new developments in our overall tourism product."

The Cayman Islands faces stiffer competition each year in the global marketplace, according to Pringle.

During the three-day program, wholesalers met with Gilbert McLean, newly appointed executive director of CIHCA, and tourism representives to discuss winter packages and marketing strategies.

McLean is a former permanent secretary in the ministry of tourism and a member of the Legislative Assembly.
