Golden Gate Bridge parking lots, walkways reopen

SAN FRANCISCO -- The Golden Gate Bridge's parking areas reopened and its eastern sidewalk became accessible again to bicyclicsts and pedestrians Monday, for the first time since Sept. 11, when access to the San Francisco landmark was restricted because of security concerns.

Under a new policy, the east sidewalk will be open only during daylight hours, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m and the western sidewalk will remain closed.

The northern Vista Point parking lot is now open 24 hours a day, seven days per week, but the southeast parking lot is open only from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Bridge officials said the new policy will be in effect until Nov. 30, at which point it will be reviewed.
