Gondola links Lake Tahoe casinos, ski runs

STATELINE, Nev. -- Heavenly ski resort at Lake Tahoe opened a 138-car gondola that transports skiers from the resort-casino district to mountain ski runs in less than 12 minutes.

Skiers and snowboarders can walk from resort-casinos at Stateline and the shopping district of South Lake Tahoe, Calif., to the gondola attraction and ride 2.5 miles to the 9,100-foot mountaintop.

The gondola, which opened on Dec. 21, eliminates a 15-minute drive to Heavenly's ski runs from the casino area.

The $23 million gondola is the cornerstone of a larger project that will include a 192-room Grand Summit Resort and an alpine-themed Marriott Vacation Club International hotel, both of which are scheduled to open in 2002.

Other future attractions include a European-style pedestrian plaza with a shopping village, a cinema complex, an ice skating rink, a transit center and a parking garage.
