Gov't issues Galapagos travel advice

WASHINGTON -- Travelers to Ecuador's Galapagos Islands are advised by the State Department to expect fishermen's protests against government fishing policies. The most significant protests are anticipated on Isla Isabella and San Cristobal.

Santa Cruz, site of Galapagos National Park, is not expected to be a focus, but travelers to all Galapagos islands should keep abreast of local news coverage and avoid protests, the department said.

The protests are expected to be peaceful, but any demonstration could turn violent, it said.

Past protests in Ecuador have been marked by road blockages and burning tires, it added.
