Gov't issues Guadalcanal advice

WASHINGTON -- The State Department advised U.S. citizens to defer travel to Guadalcanal Island in the Solomon Islands due to an escalation of "ethnic unrest."

Travelers should consider leaving Honiara, the capital, because the Solomon Islands' government said it cannot guarantee their safety, the department said, adding that the international airport outside Honiara "remains open at this time."
