WAILEA, Hawaii -- The Grand Wailea Resort Hotel & Spa finished
renovating 628 of its 780 rooms as part of an $11 million plan to
refurbish the property over a one-year period.
One hundred more rooms in the Napua Tower, which is a separate,
exclusive hotel within the resort, are expected to be renovated by
The resort's 52 suites should be finished by the end of the
Cosmetic improvements to other parts of the hotel will continue
through the end of the year.
The property is owned and managed by KSL Recreation Corp. of La
Quinta, Calif., which bought Grand Wailea in December 1998.
As part of the refurbishment, the hotel resurfaced its swimming
pools and added tents around the pools and on the beach.
The hotel grounds resemble a giant tropical park, and the lobby
is light, bright and open to sea and sky.
Rack rates for this year range from $390 to $10,000 a night.
Here is some of what the hotel has to offer:Seven lounges and six restaurants, including Humu Humu, which
is set over water.Snorkel and surfboard rentals. Snorkel gear is $15 a day and
surfboards cost $30 a day.A gigantic disco called Tsunami.A spa with a hydrotherapy circuit that offers all kinds of
soaking baths, from seaweed to a green-tinted enzyme bath.
It also has a waterfall shower and hot and cold baths.
The spa has about every kind of pampering service imaginable,
including massage service, a beauty salon, reflexology, body wraps
and the like.A fitness center with weights and cardiovascular machines.
Fitness center use is free. Personal fitness consultations range
from $40 to $75, and a nutritional consultation is $90.Squash and racquetball courts.An extensive children's day camp with a movie theater, an arts
and crafts room, a computer room, a video-game arcade and an eating
area.A chapel for weddings.Children and adult pools and a giant water slide.A golf course club.Meetings facilities.A business center.Shops.
