Grand Wailea Resort in midst of renovation

WAILEA, Hawaii -- The Grand Wailea Resort Hotel & Spa finished renovating 628 of its 780 rooms as part of an $11 million plan to refurbish the property over a one-year period.

One hundred more rooms in the Napua Tower, which is a separate, exclusive hotel within the resort, are expected to be renovated by November.

The resort's 52 suites should be finished by the end of the year.

Cosmetic improvements to other parts of the hotel will continue through the end of the year.

The property is owned and managed by KSL Recreation Corp. of La Quinta, Calif., which bought Grand Wailea in December 1998.

As part of the refurbishment, the hotel resurfaced its swimming pools and added tents around the pools and on the beach.

The hotel grounds resemble a giant tropical park, and the lobby is light, bright and open to sea and sky.

Rack rates for this year range from $390 to $10,000 a night.
