Gutsy Women gets ready for India odyssey

SUMMERLIN, Nev. -- Milestone trips -- celebrating a birthday, promotion or a successful battle with an illness -- are Maupintour's biggest sellers, according to April Merenda, the firm's vice president of sales and marketing.

In recognition of her own milestone -- her 50th birthday -- Merenda plans to lead a tour to India in November for Gutsy Women Travel, the Maupintour division that creates programs for women only.

Maharajas and Moghuls, scheduled for a Nov. 6 departure, is an 11-night program that features Old and New Delhi; the Taj Mahal; an elephant ride to the Amber Fort in Jaipur, along with a visit to the Hawa Mahal (Palace of Winds); and sightseeing in Udaipur with a boat ride on Lake Pichola. The program also includes six dinners and socializing with local families.

Some seats will be offered at an agent rate of $1,250 per person, land only. The consumer price is $2,150.

Gutsy Women Travel fashions its programs according to what women like.

Research by Yesawich, Pepperdine & Brown/Yankelovich Partners reveals that women are more tuned into scenery than men. Women also care more about the arts, and architectural and historical sites at a destination.

"India is perfect to meet the needs of women," said Merenda. "They like culture, gourmet, spa, activities and down time -- free time for shopping and doing what they want to do."

Men are not allowed on regular departures of Gutsy Women tours, although custom groups can be adapted to make them co-ed.

India also will be added to parent company Maupintour's destinations next year.
