Harrah's New Orleans to be Gulf Coast's biggest casino

NEW ORLEANS -- The largest casino on the Gulf Coast, the $350 million Harrah's New Orleans, is scheduled to open Oct. 28.

The casino's 2,900 slot machines will range from a nickel to $500. There are also 120 table games.

The facility features 100,000 square feet of gaming space in five themed areas -- a Mardi Gras court, the Jazz Court, the Court of the Mansion, the Court of Good Fortune and the Smuggler's Court.

The latter has five food kiosks. They include Olivier's Restaurant, Popeye's Chicken & Biscuits, Louisiana Seafood Exchange, Pampy's and Cafe Buon Girono.

The casino features five life-size floats -- 25 feet long -- sitting atop some of the slot machines. A 10,000-square-foot meeting space can accommodate up to 1,000 people.

Harrah's Entertainment, the parent company of Harrah's New Orleans Management Co., manages the casino for Jazz Casino Co.

The facility is located at the foot of Canal Street in downtown New Orleans adjacent to the French Quarter and near the Aquarium of the Americas.

A spokesman said the casino's location was critical to its success. It is near the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, which with more than a million square feet of exhibit space on one level is one of the largest meeting facilities in the world. The city draws 2.5 million conventioneers annually.

The casino is within walking distance of 17,000 hotel rooms and more than 300 restaurants, according to the spokesman.
