Hawaii reports visitor increase

HONOLULU -- Visitor arrivals to Hawaii from the mainland climbed 8.8% in August compared with the same period a year ago, according to the Hawaii Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism.

Hawaii received 346,530 visitors in August of this year compared with 318,440 in August 1998. And for the first eight months of the year, Hawaii saw a 6.5% increase in visitors compared with the same period last year.

Visitors from California, Hawaii's biggest U.S. market, rose 9% in August compared with the same month last year. California visitors numbered 177,580 in August compared with 162,960 last August.
