Hawaii to upgrade cruise ship piers

HONOLULU -- The state of Hawaii is spending $23.6 million on security and infrastructure repairs to its cruise ship piers in Honolulu, Nawiliwili on Kauai, Hilo and Kona on the Big Island and at Kahului on Maui.

Most of the improvements are in the design phase and should be complete in two years, according to Jadine Urasaki, deputy director of the state transportation department.

At Nawiliwili, the state is creating more berthing areas. At the Kona Pier, the plan is to add wheelchair access and strengthen the pier.
