DUCK KEY, Fla. -- Hawk's Cay Resort launched a $50 million expansion, which will make it the largest resort in the Florida Keys, its management said.

At this time the 60-acre property has 160 guest rooms, 16 suites and 138 new two- and three-bedroom villas. All villas have full kitchens, lanais and living rooms.

The resort also has a 10,000-square-foot conference center, an on-site dolphin interaction program, a saltwater lagoon with beach, pools for adults and families, eight tennis courts, four restaurants and a grocery store.

Under the expansion, all oceanfront guest rooms will be renovated as will the marina.

An additional 110 villas will be constructed; meeting space will be more than doubled for a total of 25,000 square feet, and a recreation and fitness center will be added.

None of the work will interfere with existing winter reservations, a spokesman said, noting that the room renovations will not begin until the fall.

The first phase of the renovations will be completed by the end of 1999, while the conference center expansion will be finished by fall 2000.
