WAIMEA -- One of the Big Island's most historic homes has opened as
a bed and breakfast.
The Jacaranda Inn is in the ranch town of Waimea, 15 minutes from
the Kohala Coast. On 11 acres off the main highway a mile before
town, the inn has eight rooms in cottages plus one three-bedroom
cottage for families.
It was built in 1897 for A.W. Carter, manager of Parker Ranch,
who set the cattle ranch on an expansion that resulted in its
present-day 250,000 acres. Laurence Rockefeller bought the home in
1961 as an up-country retreat. Such celebrities as Jacqueline
Kennedy Onassis and Henry Kissinger stayed there.
The house's main room, filled with antiques, became a
restaurant. Cottages, built in a plantation design on the grounds,
housed displays and boutique stores.
Mary Ellen Revana, the present owner, bought the property in
1994 and embarked on a restoration and remodeling project. She
created an herb and flower garden, converted the boutiques into
bed-and-breakfast units and built covered walkways and ramps.
The original home includes the breakfast room, a formal dining
room, a bar (the inn has a liquor license) and a library/billiard
The cottage units, each named for a flower, were designed with
their own color schemes and themes. Six have living rooms, five
have whirlpool tubs and six were designed under Americans With
Disabilities Act requirements.
Design elements include four-poster canopied beds, Oriental
carpets, Mexican tile, rattan and fireplaces (Waimea is 3,000 feet
above sea level). Each unit sleeps two, except for the
three-bedroom cottage, which sleeps six.
Through Dec. 19, rack rates range from $189 to $245 per night,
with the three-bedroom cottage priced at $489. Discounted
introductory rates of $150 and $185 are available on some
