Honolulu hotels, union prepare for strike

HONOLULU -- A strike by hotel workers at five Honolulu hotels could happen as early as Sept. 4, according to the Hotel Employees and Restaurant Employees Union, which said negotiations with hotels are not going well.

Both sides are making preparations for a strike: Local 5, which represents 4,000 workers, opened a strike headquarters office and Starwood Hotels this week opened a communications center for the media specifically for labor negotiation information.

Starwood properties in labor talks include the Sheraton Waikiki, The Royal Hawaiian, Sheraton Moana Surfrider and Sheraton Princess Kaiulani. The strike could also affect the Hilton Hawaiian Village.
