Host program offers stay with Belize locals

PUNTA GORDA, Belize -- A three-hour trip south by boat or vehicle or a 15-minute flight from Placencia, Belize, is the sleepy town of Punta Gorda.

This is the capital of the Toledo district and the boarding point for the boat trip to neighboring Guatemala.

Punta Gorda is the closest gateway to the Maya ruins at Lubaantun and to a dozen Maya villages that have joined together in the Mayan Guest House Program.

Accommodations under the program are in thatched-roof guest houses, equipped with features such as bunk beds, mosquito nets, kerosene lamps and boiled drinking water.

Meals are eaten in the homes of families who serve as hosts on guided rain forest hikes and river trips.

The host families share their domestic skills in weaving, basketry and cooking in addition to introducing their guests to traditional >music and dance.

A visit is priced at $42 per person, which includes an overnight at a guest house, three meals and two tours.

A portion of the money is earmarked for schools and health care.
