CABO SAN LUCAS, Mexico -- The Hotel Finisterra here added 40 oceanfront suites to its Palapa Beach Club complex of higher-priced rooms.

The new construction is part of the second phase of a planned three-phase capital improvement project for the 30-year-old property, one of Cabos' original resorts.

The Finisterra is famous for its pools.Under construction for the past year, the second phase also included a "Palapita" banquet facility, a kitchen and a $1.2 million, 8,000-square-foot swimming pool that gives the hotel the distinction of having the most pool space of any resort in the Baja Peninsula, according to Alberto Coppola, general manager.

With the additions, the Hotel Finisterra features a total of 287 rooms, three swimming pools and a beachside banquet facility that can accommodate 450 people.

Of the 40 new beachside suites, eight feature direct access to the hotel's private beach.

"We see the completion of this phase of our development as a key milestone in making the Finisterra the premier hotel in Los Cabos for both families and business gatherings," said Coppola.

The resort's fastest-growing niche markets include incentive groups, meetings and weddings, which together account for more than 20% of the hotel's room nights. The Finisterra's group business includes companies such as Ford, Compaq Computers and General Motors.

The hotel's conference facilities have the latest audiovisual gear, English-speaking conference staff and three meeting rooms, one of which is located beachside. There also are two restaurants, the Palapa and Blue Marlin.

"The new rooms allow us to provide upscale facilities for groups while maintaining the boutique feel and ambience of the original hotel," said Coppola.

Work on the third phase will kick off next summer, and will include another 150 rooms, a new beachfront restaurant with a bar, additional pools and another banquet facility. The new rooms will include one- and two-bedroom suites.

During the past 10 years, the hotel has increased its room inventory by 300%. Upon completion of the three phases, the Hotel Finisterra will have 450 rooms and will be among the largest resort properties in all of Baja.
