India takes leading role at ITB

As the Official Partner country of the ITB Berlin trade show, which will be held in Berlin March 7 to 11, Incredible India, the marketing entity for India Tourism, is sponsoring the opening ceremony on Tuesday, complete with food stations, dance performances, yoga and ayurveda demonstrations to promote cultural tourism to India.

In addition, India will have its own exhibition hall, which will prominently feature Maharashtra, the province that is the home of Mumbai (Bombay), the beaches of the Arabian Sea and a number of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Indias emergence as the Official Partner at ITB marks its coming of age as a tourism destination, according to tourism officials.

According to recently released figures from the Maharashtra Tourism Development Corp., Indias foreign tourist arrival numbers have shot up 78% in the last five years.

The Tourism Satellite Accounting for India reports that the tourism sector employs 41.8 million people, about 8.8% of the countrys total employment.
