Island Cuts Wait for Marriage Ceremony to One Day

NASSAU -- To facilitate island weddings, the three-day waiting period for marriages here has been reduced to one day.

According to the Ministry of Tourism of the Islands of the Bahamas, couples can obtain a marriage license the day after arriving and be married on the same day.

Required legal documents include an original or notarized copy of birth certificates; parental consent if either party is under age 18; sworn affidavits if single, and, if previously married, a certified copy of a divorce decree or a spouse's death certificate.

In order to obtain permission to marry, both parties must appear at the office of the registrar general to apply for the $40 marriage license.

Clients planning a wedding can use the People-to-People Program to find a minister or a justice of the peace, arrange a reception or hire a photographer.

For a honeymoon brochure or additional information on the People-to-People Program, retailers can call (800) 4-BAHAMAS.
