Isram Creates New Heritage Tours

Reed Travel Features

NEW YORK -- Ten years after introducing an escorted Jewish heritage tour to Poland, Hungary and what was then Czechoslovakia, Isram is launching two similar programs to Russia and central Europe.

Morris Schuster, Isram's managing director, eastern Europe, said the itineraries were created in response to requests from past tour participants. The Jewish heritage tour has been one of Isram's most successful ventures, Schuster said, and clients were "clamoring" for additional Jewish-oriented itineraries.

The 10-night tour spends two nights in Helsinki, Finland, followed by four nights in St. Petersburg and Moscow. The American Jewish Congress is sponsoring the tour.

Highlights include the Helsinki Synagogue; the Great Choral Synagogue and Jewish University in St. Petersburg and City Memorial Park, the new Synagogue and Choral Synagogue in Moscow. Sightseeing also will encompass major historical sights and museums.

Departures are scheduled from June through September. Tour prices range from $4,664, double, to $4,864, double, and from $5,614, single, to $5,929, single. The tour includes all air, deluxe hotels, daily breakfasts, one lunch, seven dinners with wine, transfers and taxes.

Isram's Central Europe Discovery spends three nights in Amsterdam, Netherlands; two nights in Budapest, Hungary, and three nights in Vienna, Austria.

In Amsterdam, the group will visit the Portuguese Synagogue in the old Jewish Quarter; the Jewish Historical Museum, a complex of Ashkenazi synagogues that is one of Europe's centers of Jewish culture, and the Anne Frank House.

The "Weeping Willow," a Holocaust Memorial, is featured in Budapest as well as Sabbath services at the Dohany Street Central Synagogue followed by dinner at a kosher restaurant.

Between Budapest and Vienna, the tour will stop at the medieval town of Sopron, whose Jewish heritage dates to the 13th century. Sightseeing in Vienna will include the Shoenbrunn Palace, former summer residence of the Hapsburgs; the baroque Belvedere Palace, and the Old Jewish Quarter.

Departures are scheduled from May through September. The tour is priced from $2,750, double, to $2,895, double, and from $3,695, single to $3,865, single. The tour price covers air, first class hotels, daily breakfasts, one lunch, two dinners, transfers and taxes.
