Istanbul's Ataturk Airport unveils upgrade

ISTANBUL, Turkey -- An international terminal opened at Ataturk Airport here after a major two-year upgrade.

The 18-gate terminal can accommodate up to 30 planes loading and off-loading passengers simultaneously and will be able to serve 15 million passengers annually.

Major improvements include 160 check-in counters that can process one passenger every 90 seconds as well as baggage handling capacity of 10,000 bags per hour.

The terminal has been built to withstand earthquakes of up to magnitude 8.5 on the Richter scale. Ataturk Airport is located 15 miles southwest of Istanbul.

From the U.S., Turkish Airlines flies nonstop from New York, Chicago and Miami.Delta Air Lines offers nonstop flights five times weekly, increasing to daily service on March 3.
