Italy sets up toll-free phone lines, Web sites to aid Jubilee visitors

NEW YORK -- The Italian Government Tourist Board made several announcements regarding new services and activities to support Italy's Year 2000 Jubilee celebration.

Two toll-free phone numbers -- accessible only in Italy -- are being established to provide travelers with information on the Jubilee and cultural happenings in Italy.

The Jubilee phone number -- (800) 11 77-00 -- provides information on schedules, reservations, transportation and accommodations. The phones are manned from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily but will close at 6:30 p.m. on Christmas and Easter.

The second toll-free phone number -- (800) 99 11-99 -- is to provide information about cultural events, exhibitions, tours and activities throughout Italy.

An official Jubilee Web site -- www.piuitalia2000.it -- has been launched in seven languages with comprehensive information on the Jubilee celebrations as well as general travel information on all the regions of Italy.

For travelers with disabilities, the government established a Web site, www.coinsociale.it, which details handicapped-accessible museums, hotels, restaurants and attractions.
