Jebel Ali and Al Bustan Rotana join Leading Hotels

DUBAI -- As the hotel building boom continues in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, two properties -- the Jebel Ali Hotel & Golf Resort and the Al Bustan Rotana Hotel -- have moved onto the membership roster of The Leading Hotels of the World.

The Jebel Ali Hotel resort has just inaugurated a challenging golf course and has changed its name accordingly to the Jebel Ali Hotel & Golf Resort.

Set on 128 acres of landscaped gardens on the beach, the hotel has 389 rooms and suites, including 120 deluxe seaview rooms with spacious terraces or balconies in the recently completed Palm Tree Court.

Each room has a safe deposit box, a minibar, direct-dial phone service, a hair dryer and satellite television. Hotel guests have a choice of seven bars (two are swim-up bars in the pools) and eight restaurants with a variety of international cuisines including French, Italian, Oriental and Arabic. Seafood dining and an American steakhouse are additional options.

Arabic barbecues, staged in the hotel's Palm Garden, come complete with belly dancing, the painting of body designs with henna dye, a sheesha (water pipe) corner and camel rides.

The Jebel Ali property was one of the first of Dubai's seaside resorts. It has grown into a multisports center, and its Resort Golf Course, designed by Pete Harradine, made its debut last December.

In February, the nine-hole par-36 course was chosen for the challenge match that was the curtain raiser for the Dubai Desert Classic; its players this year included Seve Ballesteros and Nick Faldo as well as other top-ranking golfers.

Practice facilities at the Resort Golf Course include a floodlit 27-hole putting green, a pitching green with three holes and a driving range with 36 bunkers.

Other facilities include an indoor video swing-analysis room, club rental and a rest hut and bar out on the links. Club services feature caddy carts or trolleys and PGA golf professionals' instruction for players of all ranks.

In addition to golf, the Jebel Ali Hotel is the only property in the region to offer horse riding on its premises, and new stables -- resembling an old fort with elegant wind towers and turrets inspired by traditional Arabic architecture -- are located on the white beaches of the Arabian Gulf.

Experienced riders can take long waterfront rides or go off for a desert canter; beginners are offered daily riding lessons in the paddock. Under the resort's sporting umbrella is the Jebel Ali Shooting Club for clay and pistol shooting as well as a yacht club, from which guests go deep-sea fishing, water skiing, sailing or surfing.

Parked at the club's pier is the property's own yacht, used for evening sunset sails or overnight cruises to neighboring emirates.

The vessel is equipped to sleep eight.

Other sport and leisure facilities at the resort include four swimming pools and areas for tennis, badminton, cycling, croquet and billiards. The second Leading Hotels of the World member is the Al Bustan Rotana Hotel near the airport, with easy access to shopping and the downtown district.

The Al Bustan, primarily a business client hotel, provides 300 guest rooms and suites, many with their own balconies or poolside access. All the rooms and suites have satellite TVs, international direct-dial phone service with voice mail, a minibar and tea- and coffee-making facilities.

The Club Rotana executive floor has a dedicated reception area, boardroom and business center; the Club Lounge offers guests complimentary breakfast, afternoon tea and cocktails.

The hotel offers eight international dining choices, including the Blue Elephant, which serves Thai cuisine; a Benihana Japanese-American restaurant; the Rodeo Grill Wild West Steakhouse; the Mawal Restaurant, offering authentic Lebanese food, and the Fontana Restaurant, serving three daily buffets.

After dinner, guests can adjourn to the Jazz Club, where the music is live and lively. The hotel is preparing its own T.G.I. Friday restaurant, expected to open this spring.

For rest and relaxation, the Al Bustan offers the Bodyline Leisure & Fitness Club with a pool, a Jacuzzi, a sauna, steam rooms and a snack bar. For exercise, it has a Nautilus gym, three floodlit tennis courts, two squash courts and a fitness studio.

Complimentary shuttle services are offered to a private beach club in Jumeira as well as to the Deira City Centre shopping mall and the gold souk. The hotel also will organize, with preferential rates for guests, a round of golf at one of the three golf clubs in Dubai.

Catering to the meetings and convention market, Al Bustan has the largest banqueting and conference facilities in the U.A.E.; its Rashidya Ballroom provides seating for 1,000 guests. Double room rates at the Ali Jebel Hotel & Golf Club range from $240 to $415; double rooms at the Al Bustan are priced between $200 and $300.
