KALUAKOI -- After the Kaluakoi Hotel & Golf Club on Molokai came under new management last fall, it began offering an incentive to boost business -- free golf.

The hotel, 20 years old this month, is continuing with the program through this year.

The low-rise property also recently installed a toll-free reservations line, answered at the hotel, and added other package programs.

According to Murphy Kaahanui, front office manager, the free golf is beginning to show results in increased business.

Guests paying rack rates, which start at $95, get free greens fees, normally $55 for 18 holes.

They pay only $15 per person for the cart.

A free round per guest is offered with each night's stay.

The operation of the 130-room beachfront hotel, the largest on Molokai, was taken over early last fall by owners Kukui Molokai, which previously managed only its golf course.

Kukui Molokai is a subsidiary of Tokyo Kosan, a Japanese real estate company.

Colony Hotels & Resorts had been the operator since 1987; ITT Sheraton had been the operator from the hotel's opening in 1977 until it was replaced by Colony.

When Kukui took over the management, it contracted with a Las Vegas firm to handle reservations.

Recently it began handling its own reservations, installing a toll-free number: (888) 552-2550.

A new family plan offers a second room free for children when one is booked at the rack rate.

It is for a minimum of two nights, and there is a maximum of two people per room.

Another new program provides a fourth night free when the rack rate is paid; it is available only through participating wholesalers.

The family plan and free night cannot be combined with the free golf program.

The hotel, fronting Kepuhi Beach, is at the island's west end, 15 miles from the airport.

It has a pool, four tennis courts, two meeting rooms, a restaurant and a snack bar.

Rack rates, unchanged from 1996, are $95 and $115 for hotel rooms; $140 and $155 for studios with kitchenette facilities, and $165 and $175 for one-bedroom suites.

Of the two rates in each category, the less expensive is for a gardenview unit; the other, oceanview.

All of the above rates are effective through Dec. 15.
