Kapalua announces events for 1999

KAPALUA, Hawaii -- Kapalua, the 1,650-acre west Maui resort, announced 1999 special events. They are:
  • The Mercedes Championships, Jan. 4 to 10. The season opener for the PGA Tour, it will be held at the resort's Plantation Course, with a $2.6 million purse. Previously held at La Costa, Calif., the event will be televised live on ESPN and feature pro-am events through Jan. 6, with the tournament running from Jan. 7 to 10.
  • Celebration of the Arts, April 2 to 4. The seventh annual festival at Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua pays tribute to Hawaiian culture and arts. The festival will feature a luau and show, concert, workshops and demonstrations, including quilting, ceramics, woodworking and music.
  • GTE Hawaiian Tel Hall of Fame, May 1 to 3. The fifth annual golf tournament, hosted by the Aloha Section of the PGA, will feature pro-am competition (27 teams of one pro and four amateurs) and 36-hole stroke-play pro competition.
  • Kapalua Tennis Jr. Vet./ Seniors Championships. May 7 to 9. The 19th annual tournament will feature singles, doubles and mixed doubles competitions for men and women ages 30 to 70.
  • Ashworth Kapalua Clambake Golf Tournament, June 25 to 27. The 13th annual pro- am event, at the Bay, Plantation and Village courses, will feature 40 teams (each with one pro and three amateurs) and a clambake feast at Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua.
  • Kapalua Wine & Food Symposium, July 16 to 18. The 18th annual event will feature a weekend of wine tastings, cooking demonstrations, gour-met meals and a seafood festival, with chefs and wine makers from around the world, including 10 Hawaii chefs.
  • Kapalua Open Tennis Tournament, Sept. 3 to 5. Hawaii's top tennis players compete in this annual Labor Day event of men's and women's singles and doubles competitions at the Tennis Garden and Village Tennis Center.
  • Earth Maui Nature Summit, Sept. 18 to 26. The fourth annual environmental event, previously held in summer, will include a 5k run, a rain forest preserve hike, educational seminars, crafts, exhibits, tours, an environmental trade show and the AT&T Golf in the Environment tournament.
  • Tree Lighting Ceremony, Dec. 1. Ceremony switching on more than 250,000 lights illuminating a 25-foot holiday tree and other trees at Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua.
