Kauai: Festivals and Festivities

Whether it's a county fair, ukulele jam or international film festival, Kauai offers interesting events throughout the year. Information is subject to change, so always double check dates.


Mid-April to end-August. Polo Season on Kauai features Sunday afternoon matches at the Anini Beach Polo Grounds.

1. May Day Is Lei Day. Presentations and demonstrations held at the Kauai Museum. (808) 245-6931.

24. The annual Banana Poka Festival at the Kokee Natural History Museum includes a forest education fair, hikes, crafts workshops and entertainment. (808) 335-9975.

28 to 31. The prestigious Prince Albert Music Festival features classical musicians and Hawaiian performers. The festival will also include a statewide keiki kane hula competition for boys ages 6 to 12, and a Holoku Tea, featuring traditional formal wear and a Songs of Hawaii competition. 13. King Kamehameha Day is celebrated on Kauai with cultural presentations and events at various venues on the island.

To September. Wonder Walks. Guided hikes are offered on summer Sundays in Kokee State Park.

4. The Eighth Annual Concert in the Sky features fireworks, food, crafts and game booths, entertainment, a petting zoo and family games. Held at Vidinha Stadium in Lihue. (808) 245-5006.

18 to 25. Koloa Plantation Days, an annual weeklong celebration of Old Koloa Town's heritage, includes storytelling, a tennis tournament, cultural shows, bike races and a parade. (808) 332-9831.

6 to 9. The Tahiti Fete marks the cultural exchange between Tahiti and Hawaii at Lydgate Park in Wailua. e-mail: [email protected]

20 to 23. The Kauai County Farm Bureau Fair and Orchid Show with food booths and tropical flower exhibits at Vidinha Stadium and other venues. (808) 828-2120.

18 to 26. The Mokihana Festival spotlights the island's artistic community with a composers contest, men's hula competition, a ukulele jam and other events at the Kekaha Center and other venues. (808) 822-2166.

9 to 18. Hawaii's annual Aloha Festival is celebrated on Kauai at several locations with concerts, traditional dances, music and crafts. (808) 852-7690.

10. The 10th annual Eo E Emalai I Alakai Festival. A highlight of the Aloha Festival recreates an 1871 royal procession into the Alakai Swamp by Queen Emma and her entourage. (808) 335-9975.

TBA. Kauai Orchid Show. Many varieties of orchids are on display by the Kauai Orchid Society at the War Memorial Convention Hall in Lihue. (808) 247-8335.

13 to 19. The Hawaii International Film Festival features presentations by award-winning filmmakers, shown at local theaters on Kauai. (800) 752-8193.

24 and 25. Gala Christmas Eve and Christmas Day holiday buffets will be offered at the Kauai Marriott, Hyatt Regency Kauai Resort and Spa, Princeville and other island hotels (similar celebrations also set for New Year's).

TBA. The Kauai Rodeo is an all day event complete with paniolo (Hawaiian cowboys). Held at CJM Stables on the south shore of the island. (800) 742-6096.

23. Annual Hula Hoike (show). Over 100 dancers from Hula schools in Kauai perform at the Kauai War Memorial Convention Hall in Lihue.
