KEY LARGO -- Key Largo Resorts, which has three hotels here and one
in Key West, added a European health spa and a nine-hole minigolf
course at its upscale, 153-room Marriott's Key Largo Bay Beach
Resort guests pay separate fees
to use the health spa or minigolf course. The spa offers services
such as aromatherapy, facial massages, hydrotherapy, foot
treatments, and skin polishing with herbal elixirs including
seaweed extracts, honeysuckle algae and loofahs. In addition, it
offers manicures and pedicures. Fees range from $40 to $156,
depending on the service. The minigolf course opens at 9 a.m. daily
and closes at dusk. Fees are $3.50 per person.
Nancy Wexler, the resort group's director of marketing, said the
also owns the 200-passenger SunCruz 1 casino ship, based here,
and larger gaming ships elsewhere in Florida.
One bonus of staying at a Key Largo Resorts property is the free
water shuttle, which departs from the Holiday Inn to the SunCruz 1.
The vessel is anchored three miles offshore from 2 p.m. to 2 a.m.
daily. Nonguests pay a fee to use the shuttle, she said.
The SunCruz 1 has a top-level observation deck, food service,
entertainment and games such as blackjack, roulette, craps,
high-stakes poker, a sports book, baccarat and slot machines.
The 132-room Holiday Inn Sunspree Resort and 90-room Ramada
Limited are the company's other resorts in Key Largo and they cater
to economy-minded and family travelers, respectively, Wexler said.
The Marriott, on the other hand, is a full-service resort with a
waterfront restaurant and more than 10,000 square feet of meeting
and banquet space.
Each Key Largo resort offers a two-night water sports package.
At the Marriott, rates are $331 per person, double occupancy,
through Sept. 6 The rates include a room with a balcony and scuba
diving with two two-tank, two-location dives or two 30-minute
rentals of a Wave Runner. Also covered is a full breakfast each
day, water transfer to the SunCruz 1 casino ship, drinks, snacks
and entertainment aboard the ship and related taxes.
At the Holiday Inn SunSpree, a similar package (without the wave
runner rental), is priced from $246 per person, double; at the
Ramada, a similar plan starts at $224 per person, double.
The hotels also offer a three-night Romance Package. At the
Marriott, the plan calls for a suite with a king-sized bed and a
wraparound balcony overlooking Florida Bay, champagne, a welcome
gift, a full breakfast daily, the SunCruz visit, related tax and
tips. The cost is $1,068 per couple through Sept. 6.
Similar plans at the SunSpree are priced at $479 per couple; at
the Ramada, the package costs $412 per couple. The Sunspree
provides a pool-view room with a king-sized bed; the Ramada assigns
couples to a unit with a balcony overlooking the harbor.
On all packages, agents earn a 10% commission on the
