Knott's Berry Farm to add Soak City water park

BUENA PARK -- Knott's Berry Farm, California's oldest theme park, plans to build an aquatic-themed park adjacent to the current one.

Planners project that the first phase of the proposed new Soak City USA attraction will be completed in time for the summer season.

Soak City USA will have 21 water rides and attractions, catering primarily to preteens and families, as well as a number of restaurants and stores.

The announcement of a "second gate" is a further step in the plans of Cedar Fair, Knott's Berry Farm's owner, to turn the park into a fully integrated resort destination.

The company bought the park in December 1997 and followed that up in February of this year by buying the nearby Buena Park Hotel, which it is now renovating and will rename the Radisson Resort Hotel.

It also has added several rides to the Knott's inventory, including GhostRider, the West's longest and tallest wooden roller coaster; the Supreme Scream, a free-fall thrill ride, and the after-dark laser extravaganza Edison International Electric Nights.

According to general manager Jack Falfas, Soak City USA will make Knott's "a multiday vacation destination resort for locals and out-of-state visitors alike."
