Kohala Leisure Corp. introduces HMV tour of the Kohala mountains

HAWI, Hawaii -- Kohala Leisure Corp. introduced a four-wheel-drive tour of the Kohala mountains as a supplement to its flume-like rafting trip inside a ditch built for irrigation.

The new tour, called the HMV Tour (HMV is short for Hawaii Mountain Vehicle), takes eight visitors in a four-wheel-drive vehicle into the mountains for three hours.

Guests get ready to embark on the Fluming the Ditch tour, a sedate float through an irrigation ditch that once brought water to a Big Island sugar plantation. "The only way you can get up there is with a four-wheel drive," a spokeswoman said.

The new tour is offered Tuesdays through Saturdays twice a day at 8:45 a.m. and 12:45 p.m. The price is $95 for adults and $65 for children ages 5 to 18.

A second tour the company offers is called Fluming the Ditch.

In this adventure, guests take a three-hour tour of a 22-mile irrigation ditch in five-person inflatable kayaks.

The rafting is slow and calm.

The irrigation ditch once was used for the Kohala Sugar Plantation. The cement ditch winds through dense forest and at several places passes through tunnels cut through mountains.

Clients get a little wet from a few small waterfalls that feed the ditch, but there is no feeling of risk or danger.

The price for Fluming the Ditch is $85 for adults and $65 for children.

Trips depart at 8:15 a.m. and 12:15 p.m.

The headquarters at which guests meet is in the town of Hawi, which is north of the Kona Kohala Coast.

The office is on Hawi Road, near the intersection of Akoni Pule Highway and Hawi Road.
