Korea-bound travelers can buy rail vouchers before departure

SEOUL, South Korea -- North Americans traveling to South Korea can purchase vouchers for Korean Rail Passes before their departure.

The vouchers are sold by Annandale, Va.-based America Tour Consulting, which has offices in New York; Los Angeles; San Francisco; Honolulu; Buffalo, N.Y.; Orlando, and Vancouver.

Once in Korea, clients must exchange the vouchers at one of seven rail stations: Seoul Station, Yongdungpo, Taejon, Tongdaegu, Pusan, Kyongju or Kwangju.

Three types of passes are available: Normal Passes for adults, which cost about $39 for a three-day pass (half-price for children ages 6 to 12); Saver Passes, which cost $36 each for three days and require groups of two to five participants, and Youth Passes, which cost $32 for three days and are valid for travelers ages 13 to 25.

The passes, valid for unlimited travel on Korean National Railroad trains, also are available for a duration of five, seven and 10 days.

Passholders also receive a 50% discount on sleeper or deluxe compartment accommodations for the Saemaul Super Express train, which travels from Seoul to Pusan, as well as a 30% discount at more than 20 hotels throughout the country.
