La.'s Jefferson Parish expands offerings

WESTWEGO, La. -- Jefferson Parish will have a new meetings venue available this winter. The John A. Alario Event Center is to make its debut Feb. 1 in 580-acre Bayou Segnette State Park here. According to Blake Dardar, general manager of the center, Jefferson Parish is expanding its position in the visitor market.

John A. Alario Event Center"With the opening of the Alario Event Center, Jefferson Parish can share more in some of the things that bring people to the New Orleans area. "They will now have the options of the suburbs," Dardar said.

He said debut events include a black-tie dinner, with the proceeds going to a "Dollars For Scholars" college scholarship fund. Other activities feature a reception for area dignitaries; interactive games for children, and a mini-music festival.

The Event Center is a joint venture of the state, Jefferson Parish and the Louisiana Super Dome Commission. "We spent $13.7 million to develop this site," Dardar said.

He said among the bookings already on the calendar are a motorcycle show in March, the Louisiana Philharmonic in April and the Louisiana State Games in May. In late May and June, several high school graduations will be held on the premises.

The Alario Center features 30,240 square feet of open, column-free, hardwood floor space and 2,400 theater seats. The facility is designed for sports events, meetings, shows, banquets and theater.

There are three meeting rooms with movable walls; three exhibition halls (the largest with a capacity for up to 150 booths); eight locker rooms; a full-service kitchen and two concession locations in the lobby.
