MIAMI -- LanChile has an unusual way of "growing" its airline
presence in South America: It launches other airlines.
Recently, the Chilean carrier welcomed LanEcuador (airline code
XL) to its airline family, with daily service between Miami and New
York to Quito and Guayaquil, Ecuador.
Although LanEcuador is an Ecuadorian company, LanChile has a 49%
ownership and operates LanEcuador flights using 767-300
LanChile was also the moving force in launching LanPeru, whose
domestic operations began July 1999 with service first to Cuzco and
now covering major tourist centers such as Arequipa, Trujillo,
Chiclayo and Puerto Maldonado.
International service with LanChile crews and aircraft was added
the following year, and LanPeru now links Lima directly with Los
Angeles, Miami and New York.
LanChile also owns 49% of LanPeru, with 51% owned by the
Peruvian company, Invaer; personnel training and aircraft
maintenance are handled by LanChile in Santiago.
Keeping it all in the family, as an associate of LanChile,
LanPeru and LanEcuador passengers receive the benefits of the
carrier's LanPass frequent traveler program and may also accumulate
mileage in American Airlines' AAdvantage and Oneworld programs.
LanChile itself continues to expand services on the South
This summer, the airline introduced twice-weekly flights between
Santiago and San Carlos de Bariloche, Argentina, as well as daily
flights between Santiago and Rosario, Argentina, which are an
extension of its Miami-Santiago-Cordoba service.
Los Angeles, Miami and New York are the carrier's major U.S.
gateways, extended to 27 cities through code-share agreements.
Within Chile, the carrier serves 15 destinations, including Easter
