VIRGIN GORDA, British Virgin Islands -- The time spent transferring from the airport to the resort can be a source of aggravation for clients, especially if the drive to the resort is long and tempers short after a day of traveling.

Rosewood's Little Dix Bay resort here solved this problem in two ways: its 48-foot Sunseeker yacht transports guests from St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, to its private wharf on Virgin Gorda here in under an hour, and its water-taxi ferry makes the crossing from Tortola to Virgin Gorda in even less time.

The Sunseeker, which went into service in January, carries up to eight passengers and offers one roundtrip Mondays through Fridays and twice a day on weekends.

"Our guests like it because it alleviates the need for a plane connection through San Juan or St. Thomas to Tortola," a resort spokesman said.

Little Dix Bay's passenger ferry transfers guests between Tortola and the resort on Virgin Gorda or between the resort and Rosewood's Caneel Bay resort on St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands. Little Dix guests are met at the airport in St. Thomas and escorted to Crown Bay Marina in Charlotte Amalie, where they board the yacht. Resort check-in and customs clearances are processed en route while champagne and fruit drinks are served.

Transfers are priced at $250 per adult, roundtrip, and at $125 per child ages 5 to 12. Kids age 4 and under ride free.

Guests who arrive in Tortola are met at Beef Island Airport and transferred to the dock for the water shuttle to Virgin Gorda. These transfers are priced at $75 per adult, roundtrip; children ages 5 to 12 ride for half-price, those age 4 and under travel free.

"We meet all guests arriving by air in Tortola, so the shuttle makes as many trips as are necessary each day," the spokesman said.

Although the transfers are not commissionable, the resort's Simply Little Dix package, which includes transfers on the ferry, is commissionable at 10%.

The plan also covers accommodations and meals. It is priced from $525 to $950 per night, double, through Nov. 14. A minimum three-night stay is required.

This package can be combined as an Island Hopper program, whereby guests also visit Caneel Bay resort on St. John, U.S.V.I. Transfers between the two resorts are included in the rates and are commissionable.

Other Little Dix summer packages include:

• Family Fusion. This program offers a four-night stay for up to three persons (adults and children); daily kids' activities at Children's Grove; a family snorkeling excursion; and a full-day trip to one of the island's 13 beaches, complete with toys and a picnic. This package is priced from $1,100 per family.

• Family Sports Camp. From July 29 to Aug. 9, this plan offers a seven-night stay for up to three adults and three children. Rates start at $3,200 per family.
