Lodge at Pico Bonito showcases Honduras' wild side

LA CEIBA, Honduras -- The Lodge at Pico Bonito, a luxury nature resort in the Honduran rain forest, opened, offering guests 22 secluded cabins with private decks.

Located 20 minutes from La Ceiba airport, the 200-acre property is adjacent to Pico Bonito National Park, the largest nature reserve in Honduras and home to jaguars, jaguarundis, margays, peccaries, monkeys, kinkajous, tapirs and more than 260 bird species.

The main lodge, restaurant and recreational buildings, each looking out to the towering Pico Bonito Mountain, are connected by raised wooden walkways.

The open, airy restaurant specializes in regional cuisine, and the pool terrace bar is the place for guests to relax and socialize.

The life cycles of delicate butterflies are on view at the on-site tropical butterfly farm, and admission is complimentary for close encounters with parrots, scarlet macaws, toucans and hawks at nearby Amaras, a rehabilitation center for wild birds and animals.

The lodge arranges activities such as hiking in rain forests and coastal mangroves; kayaking; white-water rafting; snorkeling; scuba diving; sailing; mountain biking, and visiting Maya ruins, botanical gardens and wildlife and manatee refuges.

Hotel rates during the "green season," June 2 to Dec. 15, are $95 for a single or double room, $105 for a triple. During peak season, Dec. 16 to March 31, the single/double rate is $125; triple is $135.

Airport transfers are included in the accommodation costs; meals, taxes and gratuities are additional.
