Lodge debuts at Blanket Bay on lake's shore

GLENORCHY, New Zealand -- A lodge called Blanket Bay opened on the north shore of Lake Wakatipu, just south of the town of Glenorchy and about 35 minutes by car from the resort area of Queenstown.

The lodge, set on 65,000 acres on Lake Wakatipu's Blanket Bay, has a main lodge, two chalets and a lap pool.

Recreational activities at the lodge include the use of charter fishing boats, jet boats, canoes, sailboats, windsurfers and bicycles.

Accommodations are in five lakeside rooms with balconies, three suites with fireplaces and terraces, and two chalets that have fireplaces, living rooms and two bathrooms each.

Nightly rates for two people include daily breakfast, pre-dinner cocktails, dinner, and after-dinner house port wines, cognacs and liqueurs.

Rates range from $640 to $1,180 per night, depending on accommodation category and the exchange rate. The rates include taxes.

The main public room of the lodge has a large fireplace, a game room with a snooker table, a television lounge, card tables, shuffleboard and a bar. The lodge also has a spa, a steam room and workout room.

There is a main dining room, a private dining room and a restaurant called the Wine Cave.

The Queenstown airport is about a 30-minute drive away.

Avis, Hertz and Budget are located in Queenstown and at the Queenstown airport.

Driving from Christchurch takes about seven hours.

Transfers by helicopter or limousine are available from the Queenstown airport.
