Mall of America proposes $1B expansion

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. -- A casino, a family-oriented hotel with themed guest rooms and an indoor golf course are among the elements of a $1 billion Phase II expansion plan for the Mall of America unveiled by Triple Five of Minnesota, the malls managing partner.

The plans also call for a performing arts center, a public ice rink, a canal with gondolas, retail space for high-end department stores and boutique shops and a tram that would connect the 4-million-square-foot expansion with a light-rail station.

Construction is expected to begin this year, with completion scheduled for late 2007.
