Many ski resorts keeping slopes open for spring

BOSTON -- It ain't over 'til it's over, and at some ski areas, the fat lady hasn't yet sung.

Last year Alpine Meadows stayed open until June 13, and Squaw Valley USA offered skiing daily until May 31. Both resorts are located in California's Sierra Nevada range.

Following is a sampling of what's out there for die-hard skiers and snowboarders:

  • North Lake Tahoe. Several downhill ski resorts on the California-Nevada border are expected to be open through the end of May, and visitors can take advantage of price breaks.
  • Discounts are available at Northstar-at-Tahoe, Squaw Valley USA and Alpine Meadows, for example, and visitors can even work in a round of golf, hiking or mountain biking, depending on the weather.

The package also includes a free hour of on-mountain activities, such as tubing, ice skating, snowshoeing or snow skating.

A three-night land package at the Holiday Inn Sunspree Resort Whistler in Whistler, British Columbia, including a three-day lift ticket and hotel taxes, is priced from $255 per person through April 21. Discounted air add-ons also are available.
