Maui events get sporty in 2003

LAHAINA -- Sports lovers visiting Maui can look forward to a full roster of activities and events in the coming months. A rundown follows:

• The EA Sports Maui Invitational will be held Nov. 25 to 27 at the Lahaina Civic Center.

Hosted by Chaminade University, this tournament will feature eight top college basketball teams.

• The annual Nissan Xterra World Championship will be held at the Outrigger Wailea Resort on Oct. 23 to 27.

The off-road, multisport championship features a 1.5K ocean swim, a 30K mountain-bike course and an 11K trail run.

The event is the final competition in a series of 40 qualifying events, attracting athletes from around the world.

• The 2003 Mercedes Championships are slated for Jan. 6 to 12 on the Plantation Course at Kapalua.

A total of 34 PGA Tour champions will compete for a $5 million purse.

• The ConAgra Foods LPGA Skins Game will debut at Wailea on Jan. 26, after the ConAgra Foods Senior Skins Game is played Jan. 25.
