Men get a tune-up at Sonesta Key Biscayne spa

KEY BISCAYNE, Fla. -- The newest wrinkle (forgive the pun) at the 3-year-old Spa at Sonesta Key Biscayne is the Mens Body Shop program that offers manly packages like the Tune Up, the Realignment and the Rebuild.

"The Mens Body Shop packages were implemented because they were asked for by repeat corporate and leisure guests and because this is an increased trend in the industry," said Leslie Allen, spa director at the hotel.

The number of men using spa services is growing. In 2002, male clientele equaled 29% of spa users -- up from 24% in 2001 -- and 60% of these customers said they used spas to relieve stress, according to a 2003 study released by the International Spa Association.

"The most popular requests have always been deep massage, facials, manicures and pedicures, haircuts, aromatherapy and mud wraps, so we packaged them," Allen said.

Before treatments, guests can take advantage of the resorts Cybex fitness center. Steam and sauna rooms are located near the fitness center.

All masseurs and masseuses are certified and educated in such disciplines as Reiki, a healing approach that uses light touch from the practitioner to channel healing energy to the recipient, and classic European treatments.

One such master therapist is Alberto Bosch. Hes been requested by President George W. Bush, celebrities and clients of the hotel.

Between treatments, the guest can take a break in the sunny relaxation lounge, replete with herbal teas, cool water with fresh lemon and green Granny apples, which are seen in many areas of the hotel along with other refreshing fruits.

After a workout or treatment, the client can order from the spa menu -- designed by award-winning Executive Chef Elizabeth Barlow, formerly of the Delano Hotel in South Beach -- available in the relaxation lounge and at dinner in the Purple Dolphin restaurant overlooking the ocean. The spa menu can be ordered from room service, too.

For the ultimate in mens treatments, a guest may want to indulge in one of the following packages (all include gratuity):

  • The Rebuild Package, priced at $360, features a facial; a Turkish scrub or thermal mineral bath; a revitalizing aromatherapy massage; and a pedicure and a haircut.
  • The Realignment package, $265, offers the facial; the Turkish scrub or mineral bath; a neck, back and shoulder massage and a manicure.
  • The Tune Up provides a facial and a Swedish massage for $210.
