CHICO, Calif. -- Moon Publications published the second edition of Carl Parkes' Thailand Handbook, which is a valuable resource for those selling or traveling to the destination.

The 834-page book, which retails for $19.95, contains tips for securing domestic and international flights and dispenses the author's knowledge about modes of transportation, such as rail, bus, car, motorcycle and bicycle within the easily traveled country.

The book also includes detailed descriptions of Thai destinations and a full range of information on accommodations.

Parkes, who has visited the country almost 50 times since his first trip there in 1979, said that Thailand has undergone tremendous change during the past 18 years.

The biggest change, according to Parkes, is the rapid modernization of Thailand and the ability of young Thais and those in the tourism industry to communicate effectively in English.

There has been a tremendous surge in tourism, making the peak season from November to March especially crowded in areas covered in the mainstream guide books.

To help readers avoid the crowds, Parkes said he expanded the new edition's coverage of more remote destinations, such as those in the northeast and smaller towns and islands in the south, "to help adventurous travelers find a more genuine Thailand."

Other changes from the first edition are the inclusion of 250 more pages, with 35 additional maps and dozens of new sidebars that detail political and economic changes in the country.

Parkes said that travel agents can benefit from the book by the inclusion of fax numbers for all the hotels.

He said that phone calls often are not the best way to make reservations there.

The author's next project for Moon will be a Singapore Handbook, due for publication soon.

He also will do research on the publisher's next Philippines Handbook.

The second edition of the Thailand Handbook is available at major bookstores or by contacting Moon Publications at (800) 345-5473.
