N.C. tourism director is honored

STAMFORD, Conn. -- Gordon W. Clapp, CTC, received the State Tourism Director of the Year Award from the National Council of State Tourism Directors at its annual meeting.

The North Carolina Division of Tourism also took top honors in print advertising, niche publications, and won an honorable mention in the electronic-marketing category.

North Carolina is one of the country's leading tourism destinations, and its tourism sector has grown to more than $12 billion annually under Clapp's leadership.

Clapp has led the state's development and marketing of its heritage tourism product and also implemented call center and Internet technology solutions.

Clapp has been executive director of the North Carolina Division of Tourism, Film and Sports Development since 1995, and plans to retire later this fall.
