CABO SAN LUCAS -- Hacienda del Mar is the latest upscale property to open in the Baja California corridor known as Los Cabos.

Situated on the 18-mile stretch that links the towns of Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo, Hacienda del Mar is the first of four hotels slated for the 1,800-acre residential resort community of Cabo del Sol. Hacienda del Mar

Golf will be the centerpiece of the project, with three 18-hole courses. Other facilities will include tennis courts and 3,400 residential units.

Hacienda del Mar recently debuted 124 suites in its resort project, which ultimately will feature 640 units, 320 of which will be used for the hotel operation and 220 of which will be earmarked for time share, according to Luis Sanchez Tena, director of sales and marketing for Hacienda del Mar.

The low-rise resort is designed to resemble a Mexican village, Sanchez Tena said, which sets the project apart from other resort developments in the booming Los Cabos market.

"The property is like a little town within Cabo del Sol," he said, adding that elements include traditional Mexican architecture and interior design, shops and cafes.

Cobblestone walkways in a garden setting with fountains lead guests to courtyards, villa units and other facilities as well as to the beach.

The biggest selling points of Hacienda del Mar are "its feeling of privacy and an ambience of tranquillity," Sanchez Tena said.

Along with the 124 suites, Hacienda del Mar opened three pools, a restaurant and a beachfront bar and restaurant. It is being developed in phases and additions call for 180 more guest units by October.

Also included will be more dining facilities, pools, a health spa, a children's camp and a lobby lounge offering 80 types of tequila, Sanchez Tena said.

In 1999, the property plans to add 140 more guest units, more pools and a convention center with capacity for 500.

By the end of this year, Tena said, Hacienda del Mar will open a temporary convention venue with capacity for 190. The property is being targeted toward incentive groups and the upscale leisure traveler interested in golf and sportfishing as well as the honeymoon market, according to Sanchez Tena.
