New Shops at Wailea looks to 'WOW' visitors

WAILEA, Hawaii -- The upscale Shops at Wailea here, which opened in December, has 58 shops and restaurants up and running out of the 66 that are expected to open.

Starting June 20, the shopping center, which primarily serves the Wailea and Kihei area of Maui, will host a weekly event called WOW (Wailea on Wednesday) from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., featuring entertainment, artists, store specials and refreshments, said general manager Michele Burla Parker.

Cache, Cartier, Coach, Louis Vuitton, Tiffany & Co., Banana Republic and Gap are some of the higher-profile names selling their wares in the shopping center.

The center contains a variety of stores, including art galleries, jewelry shops, gift shops, snack shops and luxury and midlevel clothing stores.

The shopping center replaces the Wailea Shopping Village, which was torn down more than a year ago to make way for the new venue.

The $70 million, Mediterranean-style center features 150,000 square feet of shop and restaurant space.

Ruth's Chris Steakhouse is now open, as is Longhi's, a local restaurant chain, and a restaurant called Tommy Bahama's Tropical Cafe & Emporium.

The Shops at Wailea are open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. There is a free shuttle to all the hotels in the Wailea resort area.

For more information on the shops, visit the Web site at or call (808) 891-6770.
