Nicklaus-designed golf course opens in Los Cabos

LOS CABOS -- Golfers heading to this Baja California beach resort have another championship-caliber option along the 18-mile stretch linking the two towns of Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo.

Cabo Real's new 18-hole Jack Nicklaus-designed El Dorado course opened this spring at the 56-room, hacienda-style Casa del Mar Resort & Spa. El Dorado joins the Robert Trent Jones Jr.-designed 18-hole course as the second championship facility at Cabo Real, a 3,500-acre development that includes four upscale properties: Casa del Mar, Las Ventanas al Paraiso, Melia Cabo Real and Melia Los Cabos All-Suites.

El Dorado is a par-72 links with four lakes and hybrid Bermuda grasses and greens with about 90 bunkers. The layout features six oceanfront holes on the Sea of Cortes, and the remaining 12 holes are carved out of two canyons.

The course was designed to offer an oceanfront and desert-canyon golfing experience with ocean views from every hole. El Dorado is the fifth championship course to open in Los Cabos since 1993.

The others are Cabo Real Golf Resort, designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr; Cabo San Lucas Country Club, designed by the late Roy Dye, and Palmilla Golf Club and Cabo del Sol, both created by Nicklaus.
