Ohana Reef Lanai is breath of fresh air

HONOLULU -- Outrigger Hotels and Resorts is taking its sports-friendly reputation a step further by making the Ohana Reef Lanai in Waikiki a smoke-free property beginning Nov. 20. The change will coincide with the Great American Smoke Out day.

Outrigger claimed a smoke-free property is a first for Hawaii.

Hotels in Hawaii typically designate about 50% of rooms for smokers.

A property official said there's been decreased demand from smokers for rooms, and more sensitivity from guests about cigarettes.

It took three months "to remove the remnants of smoke and smoke odor;" all fabrics, furnishings, wall coverings and air-filtration systems were replaced or cleansed, the official added.

Even the bar and restaurant, Buzz's Steakhouse, will be nicotine-free.

In other Hawaii hotel news, the Waikiki Terrace Hotel will change ownership and undergo an $11 million renovation as it will be converted to upscale condominium units in April.

It will then be rebranded the Outrigger Luana Waikiki.

Plans include converting the 242-room hotel to 217 condominium units.

Outrigger Hotels & Resorts will begin managing the 17-story building in December, when new owner Waikiki Terrace LLC comes onboard.
