Operator offers programs, customized tours in Peru's Chachapoya area

eru's Chachapoya country is a land of adventure -- and one that requires a sturdy vehicle, a driver, a guide, food and water provisions and horses where needed.

I found all of these components well provided and organized by InkaNatura Travel, one of the first companies with programs to this new tourism frontier.

From June through October, the Lima-based operator offers customized itineraries as well as fixed departures on two programs.

Both tours are priced with inclusive land arrangements (air from Lima is additional), and agents earn 10% commission.

  • Kuelap Discoverer, a four-night package with weekly roundtrip departures on Thursdays from Chiclayo on the west coast, visits Chillo, Revash, Leimebamba and Kuelap.
  • The rate is $899 per person, double.

  • Chachapoyas Explorer is a six-night plan, also from Chiclayo, that visits Kuelap, Revash, Chachapoyas town, Leimebamba, Celedin and Cajamarca.
  • Departures are scheduled for June 28; July 12; Aug. 2, 16 and 31, and Sept. 13.

The plan is priced at $1,290 per person, double.
