Operators' plans explore Central America's attractions

NEW YORK -- Visitors now can choose from a variety of active vacation plans in Central America that have been designed to explore wilderness areas by bicycle, river rafts or kayaks.

The following is a sampling of operators with active vacation options.

Prices are per person, double, land only.

  • WorldTrek Expeditions, Tucson, Ariz., offers a seven-night program that focuses on biking in Honduras and includes accommodations at Villa Rhina, a jungle lodge outside La Ceiba.po
  • Daily excursions include single track rides to such areas as Cuero Salado Reserve; a jungle river trip that offers the chance to see wildlife such as crocodiles, howler monkeys and manatees; water rafting on the Rio Cangregal, and a charter boat ride to Cayos Cochinas islands for beach and reef snorkeling.

    Departures are set for June 2 and Sept. 1 from San Pedro Sula, in northwest Honduras.

    The rate for the package is $1,399.

  • The World Outside, Boulder, Colo., explores Costa Rica's Corcovado National Park on its eight-night Osa Peninsula Hiking Odyssey.
  • The itinerary also features snorkeling, horseback riding and boating excursions.

    The Osa Peninsula offers a diverse ecosystem, affording participants a chance to hike in the rain forest and along white-sand beaches -- and possibly spot jaguars, white-faced monkeys, scarlet macaws or toucans along the way.

    Trips are rated moderately easy to moderate in activity level.

    Departures are scheduled twice a month from San Jose, Costa Rica, and the package rate is $2,250.

  • Toronto-based Butterfield & Robinson takes an off-the-beaten-path look at Belize with the seven-night Belize Kayaking program.
  • The itinerary features jungle walks, river canoeing, luxury camping and kayaking among the lagoons and coral reefs of Placencia Bay and in the mangrove estuaries of the Monkey River, a favorite haunt of shore birds and manatees.

    The program departs Belize City on Nov. 4 and 11, and is priced at $3,650.
