Places to Go offers Cancun, Riviera Maya packages

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- Places to Go moved into the Mexico market by launching a Cancun program. The operator, which features a lineup of six Caribbean destinations as well as the Florida Keys, added Cancun based on the destination's popularity and new marketing efforts.

"Cancun is a high-demand destination," said Mark Steward, managing director of the company. "Cancun's new focus is positioning itself as an upscale destination, and [Places to Go] has an upscale angle."

The company's Cancun program emphasizes top-end properties, but includes options across the board.

The initial product line consists of roughly 30 hotels. Among the options are the Ritz-Carlton, Caesar Park, Omni, Hyatt Regency, Blue Bay Village and Blue Bay Club, all in Cancun.

The Riviera Maya region south of Cancun also is featured, with selections including Allegro Resort Playacar, Caribbean Village Playacar, Club Viva Azteca, Club Viva Maya, Puerto Real and Royal Hideaway.

Places to Go's Cancun program features land-only and air-inclusive packages starting at three nights in length. Air-inclusive programs are available from gateways throughout the U.S. on American Airlines and from Miami on Mexicana Airlines.

A sample price range for a three-night, air-inclusive program from Miami is $279 per person, double, with accommodations at Maria de Lordes, to $1,027 with accommodations in an executive suite at the Ritz-Carlton.

Places to Go packages on air-inclusive bookings include lodging and airport transfers as well as meals, drinks and activities at inclusive properties.

Golf packages are available at resorts such as Caesar Park, and scuba diving packages are offered in conjunction with stays at any of the properties.

The Cancun product mainly will be marketed in South Florida, where Places to Go has its strongest travel agent following, but Steward said the company will target markets nationwide.

To roll out the new Cancun product and the firm's winter 2000 brochure, Places to Go is launching a breakfast seminar series Sept. 8 for travel agents in 15 cities throughout Florida. The series runs through Oct. 5.

In November, the firm will begin running daylong agent fam trips to Cancun from Miami. Four fam programs will be offered over a monthlong period and will include air fare, hotel site inspections, a downtown tour and lunch.

Places to Go starts agents off at an 11% commission, with the opportunity to earn overrides up to 15% based on production.

Additionally, the firm plans to offer two agent incentives for the new Cancun product. Under one program, agents who book 10 air-inclusive packages using Mexicana will receive two roundtrip tickets on Mexicana between Miami and Cancun for their own use or to sell to clients. The other incentive will offer agents a 20% commission on their fifth reservation booked. Each incentive will apply to bookings of air-inclusive programs of at least three nights in length.
